Movie NEWS - 25th Anniversary of Die Hard getting Larger-Than-Life Mural In L.A.
Are you ready to feel old? John McTiernan’s 1988 thriller Die Hard turns 25 this year. And the impact of the seminal cop story continues to be felt to this day. Die Hard simultaneously introduced American moviegoers to irascible hero John McClane, as well as to the blue-collar TV personality with a big enough ego to play him: Bruce Willis. The film’s success launched a generation of copycats. The phrase “Die Hard on a fill-in-the-blank” became a regular pitch around Hollywood studios. Basically, Die Hard is a tireless entity, and it’s about to be immortalized as such.
USA Today reports that a “giant,” permanent mural currently is being painted on the 20th Century Fox lot in Los Angeles to commemorate the anniversary of the original film and its leading hero. The mural will be set outside of Stage 8 on the lot, and reportedly will depict the famous scene, “Come out to the coast, we’ll get together, have a few laughs!” That will be confirmed during the reveal on January 31 as part of the press events for Willis’ latest film, A Good Day to Die Hard. Willis will be in attendance, as well as Jai Courtney and John Moore, his co-star and director for the fifthDie Hard film.
Fox owes Willis and Die Hard a ton, as the four-film franchise has earned the studio more than $1.1 billion at the world, wide box office (with the last two -- Live Free or Die Hard and Die Hard with a Vengeance earning the most bank). It will be fascinating to see how many Die Hard fans return to the franchise for part five when it opens on February 13th. Will the interest still be there? If not, there will always be a mural to commemorate the franchise’s earlier successes.

Movie NEWS - A Good Day to Die Hard
My favorite Die Hard movie? It’s still the original 1988 thriller that first pit John McClane (Bruce Willis) against a band of savvy terrorists. My favorite scene in my favorite Die Hard movie? Oh, it’s easily McClane wrapping the fire hose around his waist and convincing himself to jump off of a skyscraper before a pound of explosives detonate. Here’s a man defying his inherent fear in the face of extreme danger, and that human element has been missing from the entertaining but increasingly ludicrous sequels.
Take that last shot in the recent trailer for A Good Day to Die Hard, which shows Willis and Jai Courtney plunging from great heights and busting through multiple floors of a skyscraper as a helicopter explodes to their side. What happened to that guy who said he’d “never go up in a tall building again” after the explosion in the original film? I guess trouble just keeps finding this now-superhero. A new image has landed, and it seems to show the aftermath of the crashing-helicopter sequence. Peep it below, courtesy of HeyYouGuys :
In addition to this new image, 20th Century Fox announced that participating theaters will program a Die Hard movie marathon on Wednesday, Feb. 13 leading up to the Feb. 14 release of A Good Day to Die Hard. These marathons seemed to work well for the Lord of the Rings and Twilight films. And I know I’d love to see the first two Die Hard movies on the big screen again. Check out your local theater listings for information, then saddle up with super John McClane next month as he decimates Moscow. Yippee kai yay!

Movie NEWS - A Good Day To Die Hard Brings Back Another Familiar Face
The Die Hard films comprise one of the best action series of all time and even though the fourth installment, Live Free or Die Hard, doesn't measure up to the standard set by the previous three, the addition of Mary Elizabeth Winstead to the franchise was a more than welcome one. After kicking some ass as Lucy, Winstead then won our hearts (as well as continued to kick ass) as Ramona Flowers in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World and by killing, well, things in the remake of The Thing. So it was a little disappointing to hear that the fifth film in the Die Hard franchise, A Good Day to Die Hard, shifts the focus to the other McClane child John Jr., played by Jai Courtney.
Nothing against Courtney, who's got a few big projects of his own on the horizon with a supporting role in Jack Reacher and I, Frankentstein, but I'm not sold on why writer Skip Woods and director John Moore decided to move ahead with Die Hard but leave Lucy behind. One of the staples of the action series is Bruce Willis' John McClane's combative relationship with the women in his life, particularly the on-again of- a-lot marriage with Holly. Winstead's character served as a nice surrogate for that dynamic, and once of the few things to really rally behind in Live Free.
It seems like I'm not the only one lamenting the possible lost opportunity of making another Die Hard installment and not including the best new character from the previous film because, according to extra Ted Cross' blog, Winstead will indeed be reprising her role as Lucy Genarro McClane, even if only in a brief appearance. Cross, who has been blogging (and doing extra work) about the film since production started in Budapest some time ago, states that he had the privilege working with the lovely young actress: "It's a scene near the end of the movie. I got to work with Bruce Willis again, which is always nice. The best, though, was that I got to work with Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who plays Willis's daughter."
That just gave me a(nother) reason to be excited for the fifth Die Hard, which opens February 14, 2013. Happy Valentines.
UPDATE: Here's a look at Winstead on set with Willis (head over to The Film Stage for a few more).

Movie NEWS - A Good Day To Die Hard Will Cut Down On The Humor
A big part of what makes John McClane such a great character is the fact that he's always in the wrong place at the wrong time and he's perpetually upset about it. The early films have some of the best action movie one-liners of all time, and even the character's most famous line - "Yippee-Kay Yay, Mother fucker!" - was originally said as a quip in response to being a "cowboy." Sadly, it sounds like none of that humor will be present in the fifth Die Hard movie, A Good Day To Die Hard.
Though the film is still in production, director Jon Moore recently took some time to speak with Empire about the new film. When asked if the film would have any glib lines or be more of a light-hearted romp, the filmmaker responded that this just isn't the era for that kind of movie. "I don’t know whether it’s post-financial crash or whatever, but I don’t think people are in the mood for that bollocks anymore," Moore said. "People are well savvy to the cynical reheating of any product, any franchise. Any shit won’t do. The bar’s a bit higher." He did ease off the idea after, saying that there are a "couple of great gags and a couple of great McClanisms," but reinforced the statement by saying, "It’s not like he this idiot, bumbling around Moscow making ‘America won the Cold War’ jokes. It’s not Carry On Die Hard, I can assure you…"
Moore also discussed the scale and scope of the movie, which he says will follow the pattern of each Die Hard film being bigger than the last. They are shooting in both New York and Moscow, giving an international flavor to the project and apparently there's one car chase that will take them 78 days to shoot.
While I agree that McClane as a character shouldn't be treated like an idiot, treating him like a superhero doesn't work either. The best elements of the character come out in Die Hard and Die Hard With A Vengeance when he is played as a unfortunate mess who regularly runs into dangerous and pain-in-the-ass problems. And that's the John McClane I want to see in A Good Day To Die Hard - no other.

Movie NEWS - Die Hard 5 : A Good Day to Die Hard
Jai Courtney has been cast as Jack McClane, the son of John McClane, in A Good Day to Die Hard. Following a global casting search spanning several months, 20th Century Fox announced Wednesday that Courtney would be joining the forthcoming fifth installment in the long-running franchise. The previous film in the series, Live Free or Die Hard, was released in 2007, and paired Willis with Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who played his estranged daughter. Winstead told Movies.com last year that she was not asked to return to the franchise.A Good Day To Die Hard, the fifth installment and fourth sequel in the legendaryDie Hard franchise, may currently be in production, but that doesn't mean that the movie isn't done recruiting cast members. Variety has learned that both Amaury Nolasco and Megalyn Echikunwoke have signed on to play roles in the upcoming action film with Bruce Willis. Both actors are best known for their work on TV, with Nolasco starring in series like Prison Break and Work It while Echikunwoke starred on both CSI: Miami and House of Lies. While the actress' role is being currently kept under wraps, Nolasco will apparently only have a small role in the movie, playing John McClane's (Willis) friend at the start of the picture. Based on a script by Skip Woods (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) and directed by John Moore (Max Payne, Flight of the Phoenix), A Good Day To Die Hard sees our seemingly-invincible hero travel to Russia in order to get his son out of prison. While there, however, McClane uncovers a terrorist plot and, along with his son, he works to stop it before it's too late. Jai Courtney will be playing Jack McClane while Cole Hauser, Sebastian Koch and Yulia Snigir are all on-board to play antagonistic roles. As mentioned, the movie is currently in production and will serve as the first time that John McClane has entered international territory (presumably to bump up box office numbers outside the United States).
