Movie NEWS - 25th Anniversary of Die Hard getting Larger-Than-Life Mural In L.A.

Are you ready to feel old? John McTiernan’s 1988 thriller Die Hard turns 25 this year. And the impact of the seminal cop story continues to be felt to this day. Die Hard simultaneously introduced American moviegoers to irascible hero John McClane, as well as to the blue-collar TV personality with a big enough ego to play him: Bruce Willis. The film’s success launched a generation of copycats. The phrase “Die Hard on a fill-in-the-blank” became a regular pitch around Hollywood studios. Basically, Die Hard is a tireless entity, and it’s about to be immortalized as such. 

USA Today reports that a “giant,” permanent mural currently is being painted on the 20th Century Fox lot in Los Angeles to commemorate the anniversary of the original film and its leading hero. The mural will be set outside of Stage 8 on the lot, and reportedly will depict the famous scene, “Come out to the coast, we’ll get together, have a few laughs!” That will be confirmed during the reveal on January 31 as part of the press events for Willis’ latest film, A Good Day to Die Hard. Willis will be in attendance, as well as Jai Courtney and John Moore, his co-star and director for the fifthDie Hard film. 

Fox owes Willis and Die Hard a ton, as the four-film franchise has earned the studio more than $1.1 billion at the world, wide box office (with the last two -- Live Free or Die Hard and Die Hard with a Vengeance earning the most bank). It will be fascinating to see how many Die Hard fans return to the franchise for part five when it opens on February 13th. Will the interest still be there? If not, there will always be a mural to commemorate the franchise’s earlier successes.
